Salah satu konsern utama mereka yang tinggal di kota itu adalah melestarikan kesayangan mereka (dan terkenal!) yaitu Seni. Para ilmuwan mampu memulihkan banyak potongan-potongan yang telah dikembalikan setelah gempa atau berasal dari periode waktu sebelum letusan mematikan.

Rekonstruksi kota ini setelah gempa besar terhambat oleh gempa bumi gempa bumi kecil yang datang lebih banyak dan lebih sering. Saat ini, kita akan memahami ini sebagai pertanda untuk letusan gunung berapi yang mengerikan. Mereka tidak menyadari hal ini pada waktu itu.

Ironisnya, letusan terjadi setelah perayaan festival dewa api, Vulcanalia. Para ilmuwan percaya bahwa penyebab utama kematian bagi mereka di Pompeii dan daerah sekitarnya adalah panas dan sesak napas akibat abu. Diperkirakan suhu di sepanjang,setidaknya 10 kilometer di sekitar Gunung Vesuvius adalah 250 ° C. Bahkan meskipun orang berada di rumah mereka atau di sebuah bangunan, tidak akan pernah ada cara bagi mereka bisa selamat dari panas yang luar biasa tinggi. Lava gunung Vesuvius menghapuskan keseluruhan kota tersebut dari peta bumi dalam waktu relatif singkat. Jasad dari satu keluarga yang sedang asyik menyantap makanan terawetkan pada detik tersebut. Banyak sekali pasangan-pasangan yang tubuhnya terawetkan berada pada posisi sedang melakukan persetubuhan. Yang paling mengagetkan adalah terdapat sejumlah pasangan yang berkelamin sama, dengan kata lain mereka melakukan hubungan seks sesama jenis (homoseks). Ada pula pasangan-pasangan pria dan wanita yang masih ABG. Hasil penggalian fosil juga menemukan sejumlah mayat yang terawetkan dengan raut muka yang masih utuh. Secara umum, raut-raut muka mereka menunjukkan ekspresi keterkejutan, seolah bencana yang terjadi datang secara tiba-tiba dalam sekejab.

Penggalian Pompeii sekitar pergantian abad ke-20 menemukan banyak gambar erotis dan gambar penis dengan ukuran oversize dimana mana, bahkan pada item rumah tangga. Penemuan ini sangat mengganggu bagi mereka yang menemukan barang-barang ini dan temuan ini ada yang dihancurkan, dikubur kembali atau terkunci di Museum Nasional Naples, Italia selama lebih dari 100 tahun. "Seni" barang barang ini dipertontonkan kepada publik setelah tahun 2000, dan tidak ada anak di bawah umur diizinkan untuk melihat item ini.

Jelaslah bahwa Pompeii adalah Sodom dan Gomora jilid dua, dan Pemusnahan Pompeii dari muka bumi oleh bencana yang demikian dahsyat ini tentunya bukan tanpa maksud. Kalau kota Sodom benar benar dihancurkan oleh Tuhan, kota pompei "diawetkan" oleh Tuhan agar kita bisa melihat, bagaimana kesudahan orang orang yang meyimpang dalam perilaku seks nya.

Kendatipun semua peringatan ini, tidak banyak yang berubah di wilayah di mana Pompeii dulunya pernah ada. Distrik-distrik Naples tempat segala kemaksiatan tersebar luas tidaklah jauh berbeda dengan distrik-distrik bejat di Pompeii. Pulau Capri adalah tempat di mana para kaum homoseksual dan nudis (orang-orang yang hidup telanjang tanpa busana) tinggal. Pulau Capri diiklankan sebagai “surga kaum homoseks” di industri wisata. Tidak hanya di pulau Capri dan di Italia, bahkan hampir di seantero dunia, kerusakan moral tengah terjadi dan sayangnya mereka tetap saja tidak mau mengambil pelajaran dari pengalaman pahit yang dialami kaum-kaum terdahulu.

Mereka lupa bahwa ancaman terhadap wilayah tersebut belum benar-benar usai.

ANCAMAN BELUM USAI

Tak jauh dari lokasi Pompeii berada, di dekat Naples para ilmuwan mengungkap keberadaan gunung berapi super, "supervolcano" tersembunyi, yang bisa membunuh jutaan manusia dalam sebuah bencana dahsyat, yang berkali lipat lebih buruk dari letusan Vesuvius.

Lumpur mendidih dengan uap belerang di area yang dikenal sebagai Campi Flegrei atau Phlegraean Field, yang berasal dari Bahasa Yunani yang berarti "terbakar" -- adalah penandanya.

Campi Flegrei yang 'tidur' selama lebih dari 500 tahun saat ini menjadi daya tarik wisatawan di Naples. Namun, para ilmuwan jauh-jauh hari memperingatkan, zona aktivitas seismik intensif, yang dikira sebagai "pintu neraka" oleh orang di masa lalu, bisa menyebabkan bahaya besar bersifat global, yang bisa merenggut jutaan nyawa.

Atau secara harafiah, jutaan orang kini tinggal di atas gunung berapi super yang berpotensi meletus di masa depan.

Campi Flegrei sejatinya mirip dengan kaldera supervolcano Yellowstone di Amerika Serikat, negara bagian Wyoming --yang bisa menghancurkan dua pertiga AS jika meletus dengan kekuatan penuh.
Namun, Campi Flegrei lebih mengkhawatirkan karena area di Italia dihuni oleh 3 juta orang.

"Area ini bisa menimbulkan letusan yang memiliki efek bencana global, sebanding dengan dampak meteorit besar," kata Giuseppe De Natale, kepala proyek pengeboran dalam bumi untuk memantau "kaldera" cair tersebut seperti dikutip dari Reuters dan dimuat Smithsonian Magazine.
